The Filesharing Apocalypse

Megaupload – Closed

Fileserve – Stopped filesharing. You can only download your own files. Deleting multiple files. Banning Premium accounts. Closed Affiliate Program.

Filesonic – Stopped filesharing. You can only download your own files. Closed Affiliate Program. Changed server location Jan 22, 2012. Taken down it’s Facebook page Now using Digital fingerprinting. Files are being deleted as soon as uploaded (as Hotfile did).

VideoBB – Closed Affiliate Program.

Filepost – Started suspending accounts with infringing material (as Hotfile did)

Uploaded.t… – Blocked U.S. access.

Videozer – Closed Affiliate Program.

Filejungle – Owned by Fileserve (same as above). Testing USA IP addresses blocking.

Uploadstation – Owned by Fileserve (same as above). Testing USA IP addresses blocking.

4Shared – Deleting multiple files

EnterUpload - Down (Redirect)

So far Mediafire and Rapidshare are the only programs not changing anything about their services. The president of Mediafire said recently that he is not afraid of any sort of FBI raids because the company doesn’t reward uploaders and will pull them down as soon as they are requested.

I think that these companies are all terrified of being raided, when Megaupload was clearly doing something foul.

Even if they do get shut down, the internet will find a way to pirate it’s music again. Torrents still work, even though I have no idea how to use any of them.

I also expect streaming music sites like Spotify to gain more subscribers and product.

I do find it funny that ignorant people think that SOPA/PIPA are responsible for this happening.

the only documentary that consistently makes me tear up

The Minutemen have influenced me so much that when I go back and read about how they approached creating music I think to myself “Wow that’s exactly how I feel.” Then I remember that I got it from them.

Peace Be Still - 64
Alright, since I still feel like talking about it here’s a new band that is doing some cool stuff in the Emo scene right now.
Peace Be Still are out of Ontario, Canada and they play in the noodley side of Emo. They’ve got a sound kind of like 1994! and The Clippers, but my favorite part is the vocals because on some songs, he sounds like Marc Paffi from Bear Vs. Shark, specifically the way he shouts from high to low.
Side note, one of my favorite blogs Sometimes I Get Drunk at Night is now becoming a record label and 64 is their first release. You should check out the music on the bands Bandcamp, and then if you dig it pre-order your copy of the LP.

The emo tags are just ridiculous

Amongst all the posts of half naked girls and swoopy hair, are my posts about revival bands

You can spot the vinyl addicts because after a while they get fed up with the rack they are flicking through, march over to a completely different section of the shop, pull a sleeve out from the middle somewhere, and come over to the counter; this is because they have been making a list of possible purchases in their head (“If I don’t find anything in the next five minutes, that blues compilation I saw half an hour ago will have to do”), and suddenly sicken themselves with the amount of time they have wasted looking for something they don’t really want. I know that feeling well (these are my people, and I understand them better than I understand anybody in the world): it is a prickly, clammy, panicky sensation, and you go out of the shop reeling. You walk much more quickly afterward, trying to recapture the part of the day that has escaped…

Nick Hornby, High Fidelity (via mynameistrevor22)

Wow, this is such an excellent quote. I need to go back and re-read the book. The movie is so good and has so many lines lifted directly from the book that I’ve forgotten some really great quotes.

Damn, I had no idea these guys broke up too. They were a pretty great two piece Indie/Emo band. Both of these guys play in a new band with an extra guy called Mallard. I don’t quite get why that happened.

2011 was not kind to Emo.

Snowing
Grown Ups
My Heart to Joy
Victor! Fix the Sun

Footnotes

All of these bands called it quits, and Joie De Vivre almost called it quits as well. There are a few new bands that are trying to keep the revival alive, but they are only a handful that have grabbed by attention.

Victor! Fix the Sun - Person, Place or Thing
Usually when I listen to V!FTS, I end up choosing Retractable Claws to listen to, so I end up forgetting how good this album is.
I wish they had decided to stay together. Victor were my favorite of the Post-Hardcore/Emo revival. I thought that they were the most unique and captured the tone of the early 00’s Post-Hardcore scene without being a carbon copy of it *ahem*La Dispute*ahem*.
And I know that Jowls has two of the three members from Victor, and I love that band as well. It’s just a different style of music all together.

Hey Dylan have you heard of this?
It looks pretty neat. $45 and only in Nashville. It looks like the Hardcore equivalent to Cornerstone.

The thing that worries me about the Megaupload raid is that the government will be in possession of their servers. So how long until the Feds start going through those servers and trying to find everyone who has used Megaupload to download anything. God knows I’m guilty of this.

Farewell Megaupload

If only they would have taken Rapidshare instead.

As long as they don’t get Mediafire we’ll be ok.

From the stories I’ve read, its seems like a lot more was going on than just uploading copywritten materials.
